Para-badminton is a new and growing sport that has only been internationally competed in since the 1990s. The first world championships was held in Amersfoort, the Netherlands in 1998. It was going to be introduced to the Paralympics for the first time at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Para-badminton players are separated into 6 different classes:
- WH1: players who have impairment in both lower limbs
- WH2: players who have impairment in one or both lower limbs
- SL3: players who have impairment in one or both lower limbs (poor walking/running balance)
- SL4: players have impairment in one or both lower limbs (minimal walking/running balance)
- SL5: players who have impairment of the upper limbs
- SH6: players who have short stature caused by genetic conditions
