January Para-Sport of the Month: Para Ice Hockey

Para ice hockey, also known as sledge hockey is the most popular Paralympic sport. It was created in Stockholm, Sweden in the 1960s and debuted at the 1994 Lillehammer Paralympic Winter Games. Para ice hockey is modified with a metal sled (sledge) with two skate blades and two sticks with picks to propel the player across the ice. The first international para ice hockey match took place in 1969, and it was held between a team from Stockholm and a team from Oslo, Norway.


Classes

To participate in an official sanctioned tournament or event, athletes must have a permanent physical disability in their lower body. Some athletes may have disabilities such as amputation, spinal cord injuries, joint immobility, or cerebral palsy.
